  1. Any substance that acts on the central
  2. nervous system to produce changes in
  3. perception and mood and often hallucinations.
  4. Hallucinogens include LSD, peyote, and
  5. mescaline. Their effects are unpredictable
  6. and they are illegal in most countries. In
  7. some circumstances hallucinogens may produce
  8. panic or even suicidal feelings, which can
  9. recur without warning several days or months
  10. after taking the drug. In rare cases they
  11. produce an irreversible psychotic state
  12. mimicking schizophrenia. Spiritual or
  13. religious experiences are common, hence the
  14. ritual use of hallucinogens in some cultures.
  15. They work by chemical interference with the
  16. normal action of neurotransmitters in the
  17. brain.
